Age spots can cluster around the most noticeable areas of the face, including the cheeks, upper lip, forehead, and jawline. We’re not sure why these areas are prone to age spots over other parts of the face, but there is most likely a combination of genetics and sun exposure that plays a major role in the development of sunspots.

If you’re developing age spots on the face, you can either continue to camouflage the discoloration with foundation ☹, or opt for therapeutic skin treatments ☺ that can banish your sun spots. Our expert team has a few suggestions.

Minimal Discoloration: Therapeutic skin lighteners such as Melarase™ AM and Melarase™ PM can help reduce the content of melanin within the skin by controlling pigment production in the epidermis. Coupled with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments or chemical peels, your skin can look radiant within days to weeks after treatment. Melarase™ AM contains four active sunblocks that can further shield you from sun-induced skin discoloration.

Moderate to Severe Discoloration: Deeper discoloration often requires a combination of pigment-targeted lasers, daily exfoliation, and therapeutic skin lighteners. The darker the pigmentation, the more time needed to clear the skin of abnormal melanin. Los Angeles plastic surgeon and skin specialist Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian recommends daily exfoliation with Melapads™ coupled with a combination of Intensed Pulsed Light, Fractional Laser, and twice daily application of Melarase™ AM and Melarase™ PM. The combination treatment can expel existing pigmentation and prevent the reaccumulation of abnormal melanin in the skin.

Fractional laser works by directing laser energy to targeted areas of the epidermis and dermis to remove existing pigmentation and stimulate collagen production. The result, "more even-toned and brilliant skin" says Dr. Karamanoukian.

Throughout the process, stay in-tune with the causes of your skin discoloration. Thyroid levels, sun exposure, hormones, and genetics can all play a role in the development of age spots.
